The first baseman was even given the Barry Bonds treatment in his school days, getting intentionally walked with the bases loaded. Last season only two teams averaged five or more runs per game, the Dodgers and Yankees. The Brewers ranked 10th in the majors with their 4.48 runs per game.
New York reached the World Series 12 times during Mantle’s first 14 seasons. He made the most of that historic success, belting 18 home runs across 230 at-bats and winning seven titles. One of his drives landed close to the top of the left field upper deck at Target Field, yielding a projected distance of 510 feet. A Mickey Mantle homer was originally estimated to have gone 734 feet.

But the farthest home run ever documented happened in a Triple-A baseball game. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich hit the longest home run in 2022, demolishing a 499-foot blast off Colorado Rockies pitcher Chad Kuhl on Sept. 6. July 3rd, 1999 still stands as a milestone for Indians fans, who fondly remember the astounding home run that secured Jim Thome’s place in MLB history. In fact, the Indians erected a 12-foot bronze statue in his honor in Heritage Park! Thome said that he was honored, but also a little overwhelmed by the statue, and he readily points out that many other players were just as great. Enough to belt 612 big flies in his 22-year career and enough to get him into the Hall of Fame when he’s eligible.
On April 23, 1999, Fernando Tatís made history by hitting two grand slams in one inning, both against Chan Ho Park of the Los Angeles Dodgers. With this feat, Tatís also set a Major League record with 8 RBI in one inning. On April 14, 1976, New York Mets’ right fielder Dave Kingman hit an estimated 530-foot home run to left-center field off Chicago Cubs pitcher Tom Dettore.

Vaughn was traded to the New York Mets at the end of 2001, and was actually mocked at the beginning of the 2002 season for being out of shape. Despite his slow start and 268-pound stature, Vaughn got some great runs in before his knee problems set in during the 2003 season. Giancarlo Stanton hit the longest home run ever made in Coors Field to date when he played against the Rockies in 2016. Some people speculate that it might actually have been quite a few feet shorter, but that’s still the longest home run hit for years!
The distances of the following home runs, however, are for one reason or another unable to be confirmed. The definition of a frozen rope Jim Thome’s dinger on July 3, 1999, is one to remember. In the second game of a doubleheader, Thomas took a 3-1 pitch and sent it towering to left-center and it didn’t stay in the stadium long. After bouncing once on the concourse, it fell onto the street as a souvenir that holds a place in MLB history.

ESPN had a Home Run Tracker that was able to estimate the distance of certain dingers, but there is still no conclusive list of the longest homers throughout MLB history. Bonds continued the streak at home against the Dodgers, including a pair of home runs off Jeff Weaver in one game. The Giants outfielder homered in back-to-back games against the Padres to reach seven consecutive games with a home run, but walked twice and struck out in his at-bats against Jake Peavy to end the streak. However, as the game has grown and evolved, so have the players, the styles and the love of the game.
He hit a grand slam in the third inning, a two-run home run in the fourth inning, a solo home run in the sixth inning, and a two-run home run in the eighth inning. He had an opportunity for a three-run home run in the first inning, but drove in one run with a single in that at bat. A home run cycle has never occurred in MLB, which has only had 18 instances of a player hitting four home runs in a game. The other was accomplished by Chandler Redmond of the Springfield Cardinals, of the Texas League in a game against the Amarillo Sod Poodles on August 10, 2022.
This was the first time two players had achieved a four-homer game in the same season; this would occur again in 2017 when Scooter Gennett and J. D. Martinez achieved the feat in June and September respectively. When Martinez struck his four home runs for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he became the first player with a four-homer game to hit more homers than his opponents gained base hits.

It should come as no surprise that Coors Field is responsible for the three longest home runs in MLB this season. On Aug. 9, Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon unloaded on a pitch in the 7th inning of a 14-5 blowout against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 495-foot blast cleared the wall in right-center field, sailed over the advertising signs and went into the second deck of the deepest part in the yard. While the atmosphere in Colorado certainly played a part, it’s fair to say McMahon got all of that pitch and put his raw power on display. The A’s McGwire hit the ball so hard off of Cleveland’s Orel Hershiser that it caused the veteran pitcher to mouth the word “wow” as the ball sailed into the left field bleachers. Though this home run is impressive, it pales in comparison to the one later in this list, an absolute blast against future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.
An example of an unexpected bounce occurred during the 2007 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at AT&T Park in San Francisco on July 10, 2007. Ichiro Suzuki of the American League team hit a fly ball that caromed off the right-center field wall in the opposite direction from where National League right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. was expecting it to go. By the time the ball was relayed, Ichiro had already crossed the plate standing up. This was the first inside-the-park home run in All-Star Game history, and led to Suzuki being named the game's Most Valuable Player.
On May 4, 2018, Washington Nationals’ Bryce Harper hit a 473-foot home run to center field off Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Nick Pivetta. The homer had an exit velocity of 112.1 mph was Harper’s 12th of the season. Houston Astros Jake Marisnick hit a 469-foot home run to center field off Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price on June 18, 2017. The homer, which had an exit velocity of 107.8 mph, was Marisnick’s eighth of the season.
In MLB, Rickey Henderson holds the career record with 81 lead-off home runs. Craig Biggio holds the National League career record with 53, third overall to Henderson, and Alfonso Soriano with 54. As of 2022, George Springer holds the career record among active players, with 52 leadoff home runs, which also ranked him fourth all-time.
What’s most impressive about the moon shot is that McGwire hit it off of Mariners’ ace Randy Johnson, who would go on to win 20 games that year and nearly capture his second Cy Young. The surefire Hall of Famer was made to look like a minor leaguer, at least for one at bat. Legend has it, that a simple tape measure was used to determine the estimated 565-foot mark. Some baseball experts could argue that the outdated methods used to measure a home run’s distance are quite obsolete by today’s standards. But since a source like ESPN doesn’t challenge it, it still stands as the second-longest today. And in June, just at the time in the regular season when watching a game of baseball outside was perfect, Mets fans got to see this 505-foot home run from Vaughn hit the huge scoreboard at the old Shea Stadium in Queens.
